Festival of Maples and Wedges

April 26, 2010
by spudsite

This past Saturday, we were baking and selling our baked potatoes and wedges at the Festival of Maples in Perth, Ontario.   The Festival of Maples is a yearly celebration of maple syrup.  This area is in Lanark County, which is the maple syrup capital of Ontario.     Perth is a beautiful historic town about 1 hour away from Ottawa.

There were approx. 140 booths of maple syrup producers, crafters, merchandisers, and food vendors along the Main Street with a music stage, children’s activities and demonstrations.

We had a great day.  Perth loves of our wedges and baked potatoes.  The people were in high spirits and very friendly.  We love Perth and will be back for the Garlic Festival in August.

Cheers!

RESPECT, PASSION, COMMITTMENT

I sit on the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Farmers’ Market.  Its an elected position of which I enjoy and am proud to hold.

We had a meeting last night, which went on far too long, got home just before midnight!   We are busy setting up the market for the coming year.

As I sat in the meeting, I looked around the table at the 10 directors and market manager, and realized what a talented, committed and diverse lot we are.  There’s a farmer that produces over 850 varieties of fruits and veggies; a farmer with booths at several farmers’ markets and the Byward Market; another farmer who is strictly organic and very passionate about what she produces; another farmer that produces mainly corn (and other crops) for the large supermarkets; a farmer and musician with a small piece of land producing unusual produce; an unusual animal farmer who is also in the food court; a plant grower who is also a university professor; a young enthusiastic farmer trying to establish himself on rented land; a food court vendor who is also in high tech; the market manager a tireless ex-Metcalfe Farmers’ Market vendor; and then there’s me, somewhat in awe of these people for their passion and persistance for the Ottawa Farmers’ Market

What I’m trying to say is, when you go to the O.F.M. or any market for that matter, remember the countless hours that go into organizing such endeavours.  Farming is a high risk business with everything on the line each spring and yet these few spare the time to make this market happen.

I say well done!   Hope you all come out to the Ottawa Farmers’ Market this year.   Its bigger, better and there are a few surprises in store.    We open May 9th to November 21, 2010….8 am to 3 pm.

What an Easter weekend!

April 6, 2010

Our first event of the year was at the Canada Agricultural Museum

at the Experimental Farm in Ottawa, the nation’s capital.  Weather wise it was fabulous, Friday and Saturday upper 20′s, Sunday lower 20′s…perfect for baking and selling baked potatoes and wedges.

It felt like Canada Day!

The crowds were there, people were happy, children running around hunting for Easter eggs, spuds and lemonade flowed.    Anticipating large crowds, we decided to use our distinctive Victorian Oven to help with the baking.

Next stop the Maplefest in Perth Ontario, celebrating everything Maple Syrup!   Hope to see you there…drop by and say hello.

3, 2, 1…you are live, online!

F I N A L L Y !  you are probably thinking?   This is our little spot on the World Wide Web…our little potato patch on the mega farm of connectivity…

We chose blogging, because we thought we could keep you informed of our many SPUD adventures throughout the year.   We will try to update this blog at least weekly, or whenever time permits and whenever we are motivated to do so.

Its January and we are itching to get started baking our delicious SPUDS for you this year.   At the moment we are scheduling our events, festivals, farmers’ markets, etc. for the coming year and I can tell you we will be busy…but we love it!   Our first scheduled outing isn’t until Easter at the Canada Agricultural Museum at the Experimental Farm in Ottawa.

We had tried to get a spot during Winterlude (Ottawa’s winter festival), but have been turned down AGAIN!   We thought it would be a no-brainer eating hot delicious SPUDS on the canal or at the ice structures at Confederation Park…imagine it, sunny day, skating on the canal, feeling hungry and a bit cold, grabbing a hot baked potato, lots of butter, cheese, or whatever, warming up your tummy, leaving you with a satisfied glow!  But it wasn’t to be.

If you want us at Winterlude, contact the NCC!!!
